Evaluation essay is a kind of essay that aims to prompt the reader explore his/her own values and, perhaps, to accept the writer’s point of view. By its purpose, the evaluation essay is very close to the argumentative essay. A writer can evaluate everything he/she likes in his or her evaluation essay. The main thing is to provide enough examples and evidences to support his/her statement.

The major features of evaluation essay can be presented as following:

  • Authoritative voice. As a rule, the evaluation essay writer should choose the subject that he/she considers is familiar to the reader. If you want your reader to accept your viewpoint on the problem, use authoritative voice;
  • Strong thesis statement. Writing evaluation essays requires the writer to assert him/herself by means of definitive statement. The other paragraphs of the evaluation essay should support this statement by providing enough reasonable examples;
  • Convincing argument. A thesis statement without good argumentation is nothing. Support your statement with statistical data, descriptions, facts, testimonies of participants. For instance, if you assert that the novel is written in ironic key, you should give examples and quotes from the text that prove accuracy of your assertion. While evaluating any object or phenomenon, a writer is also allowed to compare it with another object or phenomenon;
  • A reasonable tone. Although, you should be extremely careful when using a certain tone in your essay. The type of the tone should depend on the kind of style you are using – if you are evaluating business affairs, your tone should be impartial, if though, you are evaluating a book, a bit of emotiveness will not spoil your evaluation.

In addition, your evaluation essay should be well-structured and properly formatted.
