Evaluation essay is somewhat tricky, since it resembles an argumentative essay, cause and affect essay, and sometimes the students may confuse it even with a persuasive one. Still, there is one aspect that will help you to distinguish an evaluation essay from the others. You have to evaluate (assess) something according to particular criteria.

As this “something” you can take anything you like: a process, event, book, film, person whatever. Let me tell you about 3 main features of the evaluation essays, that you will definitely have to introduce in your work.

1)Subject that is properly described. It means you have to tell about what you are writing, but in details. At least you will have to mention those details that the reader should initially be aware of.

2)Making a judgment. It can also be called making a thesis statement. Within the rest of your essay you will be explaining your judgment and supporting it.

3)Making a persuasive argument. This is the key point of your work. This persuasive argument should be based on particular criteria. These criteria you will choose according to the general principles of describing something. For instance, you are evaluating a book. You will choose the next criteria: plot, the main characters and their roles, inner and outer conflict, outset and dénouement and so on. To make a better evaluation, you can compare this book with a work of another famous writer. But, you have to make sure that you have chosen the right criteria for evaluation.

So, I hope these features will help you to get the essence of the evaluation essay, and you will write it successfully.
